Hyrox CEO Reveals New Categories to Boost Competition Fairness

UPDATE: Hyrox’s cofounder and CEO, Christian Toetzke, has just announced a critical update regarding the competition’s structure, aiming to level the playing field for participants. In a recent episode of the “Opening Bid” podcast, Toetzke detailed how the fitness competition separates athletes into distinct categories—Open and Pro—to ensure that “normal people” do not compete against those resembling “Greek statues.”
Hyrox, which has seen explosive growth since its inception in 2017 in Germany, is set to host over 80 events globally in 2025, attracting more than 550,000 participants. This surge highlights the competition’s appeal and the demand for tickets, which Toetzke likened to the frenzy of securing seats for major events like Glastonbury or Taylor Swift‘s concerts, with prices averaging around $110.
In the podcast, Toetzke explained that the Pro category is specifically designed for those at an elite fitness level, requiring heavier weights and higher overall physical capability. “That was on purpose,” Toetzke emphasized, focusing on the need to keep the elite athletes separate from recreational participants. This structure allows individuals in the Open category to compete among peers with similar fitness levels, fostering a more supportive and engaging environment.
The competition format comprises eight functional workout stations, with participants running a kilometer between each. Challenges include sled pushes, burpee broad jumps, wall balls, and sandbag lunges. This variety ensures that both competitive and recreational athletes find their place within the Hyrox framework.
Toetzke’s vision extends beyond the current format. He aims to present Hyrox as a potential Olympic sport by the 2032 Games in Brisbane, Australia. “Gym fitness has to be represented at the Olympic Games,” he stated, indicating an ambitious plan to approach the International Olympic Committee with a proposal for inclusion.
The conversation around Hyrox is gaining traction, and the separation of categories is a pivotal move to enhance the experience for all participants. As interest surges and competition ramps up, the implications for fitness culture are profound, making this an important moment for enthusiasts and athletes alike.
Stay tuned for more updates as Hyrox continues to evolve and redefine competitive fitness.
