UPDATE: A devastating house fire in Paterson, New Jersey, claimed the lives of five individuals, including three children, on Halloween night. Firefighters responded to the scene at 9:56 p.m. on October 31, where they faced an intense blaze fueled by strong winds.

The fire erupted in the rear of the residential structure located at 15 Emerson Ave, rapidly spreading to the second floor. Fire chief Alex Alicea reported that the swift fire spread hindered rescue efforts, leading to the tragic discovery of the victims—two adults and three children—inside the home. The relationships among the deceased have yet to be confirmed.

As officials continue to investigate the cause of the fire, a total of 11 people have been displaced. The Red Cross is currently on-site, providing crucial assistance. “Our disaster volunteers were at the scene and assisted three people in two families with emergency assistance to help with temporary lodging, food, clothing, and other immediate needs,” the Red Cross stated. They further noted that additional emergency assistance is expected for four more individuals who have requested help.
