Dictionary.com Declares ‘6-7’ as Urgent 2025 Word of the Year
BREAKING: Dictionary.com has just announced that the viral slang term ‘6-7’ has officially been named the 2025 Word of the Year, capturing the essence of a cultural phenomenon sweeping across America. This term, which burst onto the scene through a meme and music, reflects a unique blend of digital humor and generational creativity, resonating deeply with Gen Alpha.
In a statement, Steve Johnson, Ph.D., director of lexicography for Dictionary Media Group at IXL Learning, emphasized the significance of the term, saying, “Few slang terms have captured the cultural mood of 2025 quite like ‘6 7.’ It’s part inside joke, part social signal and part performance.” The term is not just a meme; it represents a feeling, a connection among individuals that transcends traditional definitions.
The ‘6-7’ meme originated from rapper Skrilla’s song “Doot Doot (6 7),” but it gained traction when LaMelo Ball, point guard for the Charlotte Hornets, used it in reference to his height. The phrase has since exploded on social media, becoming a staple in conversations among teens and leaving parents and educators scratching their heads.
Dictionary.com reported that usage of ‘6-7’ surged in October 2025, appearing in digital media six times more frequently than the average from 2024. This staggering growth signals a shift in how language evolves in the digital age, as the term blends seamlessly with sports culture and online trends.
In addition to ‘6-7’, Dictionary.com added six other words to its lexicon this year, including “aura-farming,” which refers to the cultivation of charisma for online attention, and the “Gen Z stare,” a blank expression often seen in younger generations. Other notable inclusions are “tradwife,” “agentic,” “overtourism,” and “tariff.”
The recognition of ‘6-7’ highlights how quickly language can evolve, especially in the age of social media where trends can ignite overnight. As this term continues to circulate among American youth, it underscores a cultural shift that educators, parents, and society at large must navigate.
What’s Next? As the term becomes more ingrained in everyday language, keep an eye on how it influences discussions in schools and online communities. The popularity of ‘6-7’ may continue to grow, prompting further analysis from linguists and cultural commentators.
