The college basketball season is about to commence, with both the UNLV Runnin’ Rebels and Lady Rebels preparing for their season openers next week. The men’s team will face the UT-Martin Skyhawks on November 4, 2023, while the women’s team will take on the Washington State Cougars on November 5, 2023. Both games will be held in Las Vegas, Nevada, marking a significant start for the teams under the guidance of their respective head coaches, Josh Pastner and Lindy La Rocque.

Men’s Basketball Season Opener

The Runnin’ Rebels will tip off against the UT-Martin Skyhawks at 10:00 PM EST at the Thomas & Mack Center. As they gear up for the match, Coach Pastner acknowledges that while the Skyhawks are not to be underestimated, this is a game that UNLV should aim to win if they intend to compete effectively in the Mountain West Conference.

Reflecting on their final exhibition game against Lincoln University, which ended positively for UNLV, Coach Pastner highlighted the areas for improvement. “I was proud of our young men. We should have won the game and by a good margin, which we did. I thought the ball really moved well and we found the open man,” he stated. The coach emphasized a goal of achieving 60% of their field goals assisted, noting the team’s strengths in rebounding and offensive execution. Yet, he also pointed out the need for improvements in transition defense.

Women’s Basketball Season Opener

The Lady Rebels will begin their season against the Washington State Cougars at 9:30 PM EST on their home court at Cox Pavilion. Unlike the men’s program, the women’s team has established itself as one of the most consistent forces in the Mountain West under Coach La Rocque.

La Rocque expressed optimism about the upcoming season, particularly regarding the new roster. “Honestly, it’s been amazing. I don’t think change is always a bad thing. We have people who are excited, that want to be here and have great energy and want to be a part of what we have built here already, which is just a winning culture,” she remarked. The coach noted the importance of integrating fresh perspectives and personalities into the team dynamic, which she believes will enhance their competitive edge.

As both teams prepare for their season openers, fans are eager to see how these developments will translate into performance on the court. With the excitement of college basketball returning, the UNLV Rebels aim to make a strong impression in the upcoming season.
