Trump’s Trade War with Canada Faces Growing Backlash from Americans
President Donald Trump is facing increasing criticism from Americans over his ongoing trade dispute with Canada. According to CNN data analyst Harry Enten, recent polls indicate that the U.S. public’s perception of Trump’s trade policies is becoming increasingly negative. He highlighted findings from the Pew Research Center and CNN aggregate polling data that show a marked dip in support for Trump’s tariff strategy.
Enten pointed out that Canada enjoys a significantly favorable reputation in the United States, stating, “We’re talking about Canada coming out nearly 60 points ahead on the net popularity rating versus Donald Trump here in the United States.” He emphasized that engaging in a conflict with a country that most Americans hold in high regard may not be a politically wise move for the president.
Polling data from sources such as CBS News, YouGov, and Reuters/Ipsos indicate a growing disapproval of Trump’s tariff policies. Currently, 60% of Americans oppose the president’s approach to tariffs, a significant increase from 48% in November 2024. Enten’s analysis reflects a shift in public sentiment that could impact Trump’s political standing.
The economic implications of these tariffs are substantial. The average effective U.S. tariff rate has surged from approximately 2.5% at the beginning of 2025 to 18%, marking the highest level since 1934, according to a recent analysis by Budget Lab at Yale University. This increase in tariffs has direct consequences for American consumers, with economists from Goldman Sachs predicting that by year’s end, U.S. consumers will bear 55% of the costs associated with these tariffs, while 22% will affect U.S. businesses.
Enten remarked on the political ramifications of these trade policies, advising Trump to reconsider his approach. “If I was advising Donald John Trump when it comes to his politics, I’d say step off the tariffs at least from a political point of view,” he stated. He underscored that the current sentiment reflects one of the largest shifts observed during Trump’s second term in office.
Last week, Trump escalated tensions by imposing an additional 10% tariff on Canadian imports and halting trade discussions in response to an anti-tariff advertisement produced by the Government of Ontario. This ad, which aired in the United States, featured excerpts from Ronald Reagan‘s 1987 presidential address, emphasizing the importance of free and fair trade.
Enten concluded by comparing the dynamics of the trade disputes, noting, “Picking a fight with China is one thing. Picking a fight with Canada is something totally different here.” His comments reflect a growing consensus that Trump’s approach to trade with Canada may not resonate well with the American public, potentially jeopardizing his political capital as he navigates these complex issues.
