The director general of the International Atomic Energy Agency, Rafael Mariano Grossi, stated that Iran does not appear to be actively enriching uranium at present. However, he noted that there has been renewed movement observed at the nation’s nuclear sites. His comments were made during an interview with The Associated Press at the United Nations headquarters in New York on Wednesday.

While Grossi emphasized that inspectors have not detected any acceleration in uranium enrichment beyond the levels previously recorded prior to the conflict with Israel in June 2023, he raised concerns about the enriched nuclear material still present in Iran. “The nuclear material enriched at 60% is still in Iran. This is one of the points we are discussing because we need to go back there and confirm that the material is there and not being diverted to any other use,” Grossi said.

Despite the lack of access to Iranian nuclear sites, Grossi indicated that the IAEA has been monitoring activities through satellite imagery. He pointed out that while this method provides some information, it has limitations in assessing the full scope of developments on the ground. “Inspectors have seen movement around the sites where the stockpiles are stored,” he added.

The IAEA’s ongoing challenge of obtaining direct access to Iranian facilities complicates the agency’s ability to verify the status of uranium enrichment fully. The situation remains delicate, as concerns persist about the potential for nuclear material to be misused. The agency continues to emphasize the importance of transparency and cooperation from Iran.

As the international community watches closely, the IAEA’s role in monitoring nuclear activities is crucial. Grossi’s remarks highlight the ongoing tensions and the need for continued dialogue to ensure compliance with nuclear regulations and to foster greater understanding among nations.
