Southern California Pastor Sentenced to 45 Years for Child Assaults
UPDATE: A Southern California pastor, Carlos Ramirez Valdez, has been sentenced to 45 years to life in prison for the sexual assault of three young girls he met through church. This urgent ruling was announced on October 24, 2025, following his conviction in August for crimes committed between 2012 and 2019.
Valdez, aged 61 and formerly a church leader at Iglesia De Dios Ebenezer Church in Santa Ana, was arrested in 2021 after disturbing reports surfaced. The assaults began when one victim was just 4 years old and continued over a seven-year period. Prosecutors revealed that Valdez lured the girl into the church’s basement or a parked van, where he assaulted her. She eventually reported the abuse to a school counselor, leading to the investigation.
The case escalated in January 2020 when two additional victims came forward. One girl, who was 9 years old at the time, reported that Valdez molested her after offering her a ride home from church between 2014 and 2015. Another victim, aged 7 to 8 years old, disclosed that he repeatedly assaulted her in a backyard shed during 2017.
Valdez faced a total of 11 felony counts of lewd acts with minors under 14 and three felony counts of oral copulation or sexual penetration of a child under 10. The Orange County District Attorney, Todd Spitzer, condemned Valdez’s actions, stating, “Churches should be safe sanctuaries, not hunting grounds for child molesters.”
The verdict sends a strong message about the prosecution of child predators. “The sexual exploitation of children will never be acceptable, and predators will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law,” Spitzer asserted.
As communities react to this shocking case, officials emphasize the importance of vigilance in protecting children. Parents and guardians are urged to maintain open lines of communication with children and report any suspicious behavior.
This case highlights the critical need for safe environments, particularly in institutions meant to foster trust and care. The emotional impact on the victims and their families is profound, and advocates are now calling for stronger protections and support systems for vulnerable youth.
The legal repercussions for Valdez mark a significant milestone in the fight against child exploitation. As the community grapples with the fallout, authorities continue to encourage vigilance and awareness to safeguard against similar abuses in the future.
