Missing Middlebury College Student Lia Smith Confirmed Dead by Suicide

UPDATE: Authorities in Vermont have confirmed that Lia Smith, a 21-year-old transgender student from Middlebury College, died by suicide. The announcement follows an autopsy conducted by the Vermont Chief Medical Examiner’s Office after her body was discovered on October 19, 2023, during a search operation.

The tragic news was revealed late Friday by Vermont State Police, who stated that the body found near The Knoll, a college organic farm in Cornwall, was identified as Smith. She had been reported missing just days earlier, on October 15, after being last seen on campus.

Middlebury College, with approximately 2,800 undergraduate students, initially alerted the campus community about Smith’s disappearance shortly after she was reported missing. In a heartfelt statement, Middlebury College President Ian Baucom expressed the profound sadness felt across the community. “This is incredibly saddening news, and we are working to support our community in every way we can at this difficult time,” he stated.

Smith, who previously lived in Woodside, California, was a double major in statistics and computer science and had been an active member of the college’s swimming and diving team, as well as various clubs focused on chess and women in computer science.
