Lauri Markkanen Scores 51, Leads Jazz to Thrilling OT Victory
UPDATE: In a stunning performance, Lauri Markkanen scored a career-high 51 points as the Utah Jazz triumphed over the Phoenix Suns 138-134 in overtime on Monday night in Salt Lake City. This marks the first time a Jazz player has reached 50 points in a regular-season game since Karl Malone did so in 1998.
Markkanen’s electrifying night included a perfect 17-for-17 at the free-throw line, tying the record for most free throws made without a miss in Jazz history. He also contributed 14 rebounds, showcasing his all-around skills. With this performance, Markkanen became the first player in Jazz history to achieve 50 points, 10 rebounds, and 5 made 3-pointers in a single game.
The Jazz appeared to be in control, leading by seven points with just 19 seconds left in regulation. However, the Suns rallied back, with Devin Booker sinking two crucial three-pointers to tie the game, forcing overtime after a missed free throw led to a rebound basket by Mark Williams.
In the overtime period, Markkanen shone again, scoring seven points, including two critical free throws with just 1.9 seconds remaining to seal the victory. His performance is especially significant as it ended a drought of 27 years and 203 days since the Jazz last had a player score 50 points in a regular-season game, marking the fourth-longest span in NBA history.
Besides Markkanen, Keyonte George contributed 26 points and 10 assists, while Walker Kessler added 25 points, 11 rebounds, and four blocks. The Jazz, now at 2-1, have proven to be competitive early in the season, despite initial expectations of finishing at the bottom of the NBA standings.
The Suns, on the other hand, have struggled, losing their third straight game and falling to 1-3. In addition to Booker’s performance, which included 34 points, the team was without key players Jalen Green and Dillon Brooks due to injuries.
As the Jazz continue their season, all eyes will be on Markkanen as he aims to build on this historic night. The team’s next game could further define their early-season trajectory, while the Suns will need to regroup swiftly to halt their losing streak. This thrilling matchup is a reminder of the excitement and unpredictability of the NBA.
