Raiders’ Practice Squad Players Train Hard for NFL Glory
At the Las Vegas Raiders headquarters, practice squad players face a demanding and often overlooked role in the National Football League (NFL). Each week, players like Chris Collier and Cam Miller simulate the skills and strategies of opposing teams, preparing the starters for their upcoming matchups. Their task is vital as they mimic athletes such as Jonathan Taylor or Jalen Hurts, providing the first-string players with a realistic practice experience.
Miller, a rookie seventh-round pick from North Dakota State, took on the persona of quarterbacks like Bo Nix and Trevor Lawrence as the Raiders geared up for their “Thursday Night Football” game against the Denver Broncos. His commitment underscores the practice squad’s primary purpose: to ensure that players at the top of the roster feel fully prepared. “It’s just doing everything you can to make sure the starters feel prepared,” Miller said.
Collier, a second-year running back from Lock Haven, emphasizes the professional growth that comes with this unique role. “If anything, it makes you a more polished player,” he noted. The daily grind against the team’s top talent positions them for potential future opportunities, should those arise.
Life on the Practice Squad
Players on the practice squad juggle various responsibilities, contributing significantly to team dynamics while remaining relatively unknown. Dalton Wagner, a third-year offensive tackle, highlights the multifaceted nature of their work. “It’s anything and everything that the team needs you to do,” he explained. While striving for their place on the 53-man roster, practice squad members must constantly improve and adapt.
Wagner’s experience illustrates this versatility. He frequently shifts between positions, spending time blocking against defensive end Maxx Crosby and then transitioning to offensive line drills. “You’re bouncing around for whatever the team needs,” Wagner stated. Each practice session serves as a chance to refine skills against elite opponents, which he views as a measure of personal development.
The weekly routine for these players is rigorous. They dedicate countless hours to training, studying playbooks, and preparing for their roles in practice. “Unlimited amounts of work,” Collier remarked with a smile, as he acknowledged the demanding schedule.
Challenges and Aspirations
The NFL practice squad comprises up to 16 players, primarily younger prospects in need of further development. Of these, ten spots are reserved for first- or second-year players. Each week, teams can elevate two players from the practice squad to fill their game-day roster, adding an element of urgency to the roles.
Compensation for practice squad players has improved, with those possessing two years of experience earning approximately $13,000 per week, totaling $234,000 over a regular season. More experienced players can earn between $17,700 and $22,000 weekly. In contrast, the minimum salary for a player on the 53-man roster starts at $840,000 for rookies and increases with experience.
The uncertainty of the NFL creates a volatile environment for practice squad players. They can be signed to another team or released at any moment. Collier experienced this firsthand when he was waived by the Baltimore Ravens after signing a long-term lease and buying furniture for his apartment. Two weeks later, he was signed to the Raiders, forcing him to relocate. “It was a life lesson,” Collier reflected, explaining his new approach to living arrangements. This season, he opted for an Airbnb that allows him to leave with minimal notice.
Similarly, wide receiver Alex Bachman, who transitioned from practice squad to the 53-man roster, adopts a flexible lifestyle to accommodate the unpredictable nature of the league. He maintains a rental car in California to ensure ease of mobility during the season. “For my living, it’s all situational,” Bachman said, highlighting the adaptability required to pursue NFL aspirations.
As the Raiders prepare for their upcoming games, the dedication of players like Collier, Miller, and Wagner is evident. Their hard work may not always be recognized, but it plays an essential role in shaping the team’s success. In the world of professional football, every contribution counts, and these players remain committed to their dreams of rising through the ranks.
