NBA Teams Struggle Early: Heat’s Offense, Pelicans’ Woes, and Magic’s Defense

The early weeks of the NBA season have sparked significant discussions around several teams, particularly the Miami Heat, New Orleans Pelicans, and Orlando Magic. As of now, the Heat are surprising many with a strong start, while the Pelicans find themselves at the bottom of the standings, and the Magic are grappling with defensive inconsistencies.
Heat’s Fast-Paced Offense Thrives
The Miami Heat currently boast a 3–1 record, defying expectations and catching the attention of analysts and fans alike. Much of this success can be credited to the innovative coaching of Erik Spoelstra, who has shifted the team from a slow, methodical style to a much faster-paced offense. The Heat have risen to second in the league for pace, a significant improvement from their previous seasons where they often ranked among the bottom five.
Spoelstra’s approach relies heavily on a fluid style of play that emphasizes quick reactions rather than set plays. For instance, while most teams utilize the pick-and-roll extensively—averaging around 20% of their offensive plays—the Heat have limited this tactic to just 6.6%. Instead, players are encouraged to read the game as it unfolds. This strategy has resulted in Miami having seven players averaging double-digit points, with standout performances from Bam Adebayo and Simone Fontecchio.
Yet, questions remain regarding sustainability. The recent game against the San Antonio Spurs highlighted potential vulnerabilities, as Miami struggled to maintain their pace against a more organized defense. The Heat will likely need to establish a more effective half-court offense, particularly once their leading scorer, Tyler Herro, returns from injury.
Pain for the Pelicans
In stark contrast, the New Orleans Pelicans are experiencing a rough start, currently sitting at 0–4. Their performance has been characterized by disarray, with the team ranking last in offensive efficiency and 27th in defense, according to NBA.com statistics. In a recent loss to the Denver Nuggets, the Pelicans were outscored 39–11 in the third quarter, prompting concerns about the team’s direction under head coach Willie Green.
The struggles can be attributed to several factors, including inconsistent shooting from players like Trey Murphy III, who has seen a noticeable decline in his performance. Star player Zion Williamson has also faced challenges, particularly in games where defenses have effectively neutralized him. The pressure is mounting on Green, especially given the team’s recent decision to trade away a future first-round pick to draft Derik Queen, whose early performance has not yet justified the investment.
As the Pelicans seek to find their footing, the stakes are high. Should their struggles continue, Green’s position could be in jeopardy, particularly with the new executive vice president of basketball operations, Joe Dumars, looking for results.
Magic’s Defensive Dilemma
Meanwhile, the Orlando Magic managed a crucial win against the Charlotte Hornets, showcasing potential with multiple players scoring over 20 points in the game. However, the team’s overall performance has raised alarms, particularly regarding their defensive efficiency, ranking 21st in the league. This is surprising for a team that previously ranked in the top three defensively in recent seasons.
The Magic’s increased pace has contributed to some of these defensive lapses, as they now find themselves in the top ten for offensive pace—an adjustment from their slower style in the past. Players like Paolo Banchero have acknowledged the need for improved effort on the defensive end, stating, “We’ve just got to play with more heart.”
As the season progresses, the Magic will need to refine their approach to balance their offensive improvements with a return to their defensive roots.
The early season has been a rollercoaster for these teams, with the Heat rising to the occasion, while the Pelicans and Magic face significant challenges. As the games continue, the outcomes of these early struggles could shape the trajectories of the respective franchises for the remainder of the season.
