Biohacking for All: Inside Upgrade Labs’ Human Upgrade Center

The concept of biohacking has taken a significant leap with the establishment of Upgrade Labs, touted as a “Human Upgrade Center.” Founded by Dave Asprey in 2017, the facility aims to make advanced wellness technologies accessible to the general public. Asprey, credited with launching the biohacking movement, envisioned a space where individuals could experience the same innovations typically reserved for the wealthy elite.
At the Upgrade Labs location in Austin, Texas, members can access a variety of cutting-edge therapies for a monthly fee of $189. These include high-tech workout gear and recovery tools designed to enhance physical performance, accelerate healing, and improve overall well-being. During a recent visit, I had the opportunity to try several of these therapies, each offering a unique approach to health and fitness.
The Experience of ‘The Big Squeeze’
One of the standout therapies is the Ballancer Pro, commonly referred to as “The Big Squeeze.” This FDA-approved compression therapy device employs 24 air chambers that inflate and deflate in waves, targeting areas related to the lymphatic system. By applying pressure to the stomach, hips, thighs, and glutes, the device aims to reduce water retention, alleviate muscle soreness, and improve circulation.
After a 40-minute session, I noticed a marked difference; my body felt lighter, and the sensation of bloating had significantly diminished. Celebrity endorsements, including those from Jennifer Aniston and Paris Hilton, have contributed to the device’s popularity.
Pulsed Electromagnetic Field Therapy
Following the compression therapy, I experienced pulsed electromagnetic field therapy (PEMF) through a specialized blanket. This treatment involves low-level electromagnetic waves that penetrate the skin to stimulate cellular activity. Although research is ongoing, preliminary studies suggest potential benefits for muscle recovery and overall cell performance.
As I lay under the blanket, I felt a series of pulses that targeted sore areas, particularly my back. The treatment was surprisingly effective; after just 12 minutes, I felt relief from pain that had been troubling me. The added boost of energy I experienced afterwards was an unexpected benefit.
Exploration of Light Therapy
Next, I tried the Redcharger, a frequency-specific light therapy device. This machine utilizes a combination of red, infrared, near-infrared, and green light to energize cells and reduce inflammation. I opted for a general tune-up session which lasted 20 minutes. Enveloped in the pod, I quickly felt a wave of relaxation wash over me, leading to a brief moment of dozing off. Emerging from the session, I felt invigorated, with an unmistakable lightness of being.
Challenging Cold Therapy
Upgrade Labs also features a cryotherapy chamber, which presents a more intense experience. The chamber operates at a chilling -175°F, designed to promote calorie burning and reduce inflammation. Before entering, I donned protective gear to shield against the extreme cold. Despite initial discomfort, I focused on deep breathing and music from AC/DC, which made the experience feel quicker.
After exiting the chamber, a rush of warmth enveloped me, leaving me energized and mentally sharp. The drop in internal body temperature during the session—from 97°F to 68°F—was a reminder of the physiological changes occurring within me.
Breathing Training for Enhanced Performance
Finally, I tried a metabolic trainer that mimics altitude training by alternating oxygen levels. This method is intended to enhance cardiovascular health and metabolic function. Settled into a recliner with a mask, I breathed intermittently for 40 minutes. The experience was both calming and disorienting, with fluctuations in oxygen levels that made me feel lightheaded at times.
Upon removing the mask, I noticed improved ease in my breathing. This newfound clarity translated to better performance during physical activities later that day.
Upgrade Labs exemplifies a growing trend in wellness that appeals to those seeking accessible yet advanced health solutions. With its innovative approach, it stands as a potential game-changer for individuals eager to enhance their physical and mental performance. As the demand for such centers rises, the prospect of similar facilities opening in other cities, such as New York, could offer even more individuals the chance to explore the benefits of biohacking.
