Inside the Real Ranches Behind the Yellowstone Franchise

The Yellowstone franchise, a major television phenomenon, not only portrays stories set on ranches but also utilizes real-life locations for filming. Many of these ranches are owned by the series’ co-creator, Taylor Sheridan. Following his transition from actor to writer, Sheridan launched the original series in 2018, which concluded in 2024. He has since expanded the universe with prequels such as 1883 and 1923, along with upcoming spinoffs like The Dutton Ranch, The Madison, and Y: Marshals.

Sheridan’s creative endeavors have enabled film production across various locations in the American West, particularly on ranches. Cast members from his shows have shared their experiences in what they refer to as “cowboy camp,” an essential training process for actors. In 2022, actor Brian Geraghty remarked on the benefits of this training for both skill development and character bonding, stating, “It’s really helpful for learning to really become proficient on horses and use guns and the period piece weapons.”

The training not only enhances the actors’ abilities but also fosters camaraderie among the cast. Michelle Randolph added that the experience was enjoyable, filled with “a lot of ice baths,” while Darren Mann described the camp as a “well-oiled machine,” highlighting the strong relationships formed on set.

Real Ranches Featured in the Yellowstone Universe

The primary ranch featured in the franchise is the Chief Joseph Ranch in Montana, which serves as the backdrop for the fictional Dutton family. Since its debut in Yellowstone, the ranch has become a popular tourist destination, welcoming guests eager to experience its connection to the show.

Another filming location is the Yellowstone Film Ranch, where scenes for the spinoff 1883 were shot. This site boasts a Western town with 26 structures, recreating the historical ambiance necessary for the narrative.

Sheridan also owns Bosque Ranch in Texas, a personal property that has transformed into a venue for film and TV shoots, concerts, and other special events. In 2024, he acquired Papa’s Creek Ranch in Wyoming, although it has yet to be featured on screen. This ranch marks a personal addition to Sheridan’s extensive portfolio.

Another significant acquisition was the Four Sixes Ranch, purchased in 2021. This legendary Texas ranch, which has been operational for over a century, is slated to appear in the delayed spinoff 6666. The series aims to follow the character Jimmy Hurdstrom, played by Jefferson White, during his time at the ranch. The official description notes the ranch’s deep roots in American history, stating, “Founded when Comanches still ruled West Texas, no ranch in America is more steeped in the history of the West than the 6666.”
