Taiwanese Influencer Found Dead in Hotel Bathtub, Murder Probe Launched
A Taiwanese influencer known for her provocative online presence was found dead in a hotel bathtub in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, leading authorities to investigate her death as a possible murder. Iris Hsieh, 31, was discovered around 13:40 local time on October 22, 2023, at a hotel located on Jalan Conlay, according to reports from The Star and the New Straits Times. Initially classified as a sudden death, the case has since drawn significant attention, prompting a murder investigation by local law enforcement.
Hsieh, whose real name is Hsieh Yu-hsin, had over 547,000 followers on Instagram and was reportedly in the hotel with local rapper Namewee, whose real name is Wee Meng Chee. Following her death, Namewee was arrested on the same day for alleged possession and use of drugs. He was released on bail on October 24 after pleading not guilty, as confirmed by police officer Datuk Fadil Marsus.
The rapper, known for his controversial lyrics, was apprehended after officers found ecstasy pills in his possession. Subsequent drug tests indicated he had used amphetamines, methamphetamine, ketamine, and THC, as reported by the BBC. In a translated statement on Instagram, Namewee expressed his sorrow over Hsieh’s death, asserting that he had not used drugs and stating, “The truth will be out when the police report is released.”
While Namewee has not been formally named as a suspect, police are actively gathering evidence, including surveillance footage and statements from hotel staff, to reconstruct Hsieh’s final movements. Datuk Marsus stated, “We will re-examine all the victim’s movements and that of the suspect we have identified. We expect to make an arrest soon and will provide updates from time to time.” This comprehensive investigation aims to clarify the circumstances surrounding Hsieh’s death.
The cause of death remains undetermined, with toxicology results pending from the authorities. Iris Hsieh had garnered public attention for her daring stunts, including a controversial incident last year in which she removed her thong while seated in an Ikea store in Taipei City, Taiwan, using the garment to style her hair. Her social media accounts frequently featured provocative images and bikini-clad posts, contributing to her notoriety.
As the investigation unfolds, it brings to light not only the tragic end of a rising social media star but also raises questions about the circumstances leading to her untimely death. The case continues to develop, with law enforcement promising further updates as they gather more information.
