A significant earthquake measuring 6.3 on the Richter scale struck northern Afghanistan early on October 30, 2023. According to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), the quake occurred at 12:59 a.m. local time, with its epicenter located 22 kilometers (approximately 14 miles) west-southwest of Khulm, at a depth of 28 kilometers.

Initial assessments indicate no immediate reports of damage or injuries from the quake. However, Afghanistan has a history of devastating earthquakes, making the situation particularly concerning.

Recent Earthquake History in Afghanistan

This latest seismic event follows other significant earthquakes in the region. In late August 2025, a 6.0 magnitude earthquake struck eastern Afghanistan near the Pakistan border, resulting in over 2,200 fatalities. Additionally, on October 7, 2023, another earthquake measuring 6.3 triggered strong aftershocks and claimed at least 4,000 lives, according to reports from the Taliban government.

The frequency and intensity of these earthquakes raise alarm among residents and authorities in Afghanistan, a country already grappling with ongoing humanitarian challenges.

As rescue and recovery efforts continue following previous seismic events, the international community remains vigilant. As of now, the focus is on monitoring the aftermath of this latest quake and ensuring preparedness for potential aftershocks.

Although there are no immediate concerns regarding casualties from the current earthquake, the impact of such natural disasters on the vulnerable population of Afghanistan cannot be overlooked.
