West Aurora’s Aguirre Scores Twice, Leads Team to Thrilling Win

UPDATE: In a stunning display of skill and determination, Mason Aguirre propelled West Aurora to a dramatic 3-2 victory over Oswego East in the Class 3A regional semifinal on October 21, 2025. Aguirre scored twice and converted the decisive penalty kick in a tense shootout, securing the Blackhawks’ spot in the regional final.
With less than five minutes remaining, Aguirre felt the weight of his team’s hopes resting on his shoulders. “I was just thinking I needed to do something,” Aguirre stated. “I’m a scorer and I’m the one in charge.” His leadership shone through as he not only tied the game with a crucial goal in the 76th minute but also took responsibility during the shootout, where West Aurora triumphed 4-2 after a 2-2 draw in regulation.
West Aurora, seeded sixth, improved to 14-7-1 and will face third-seeded Plainfield Central (17-6-1) in the regional final at 10 a.m. Saturday. The Blackhawks’ path to victory was not easy; they had previously lost to Oswego East 1-0 in their season opener.
Aguirre’s performance did not go unnoticed. Senior goalkeeper Luis Garcia praised his captain’s ability to change the game. “I had faith in him that he was going to do something to change the game,” Garcia said, highlighting Aguirre’s dedication and leadership as a three-year varsity player.
Sophomore midfielder Noe Del Rio echoed this sentiment, stating, “He’s the main guy on our team and the one who’s hungriest to score goals.” Aguirre’s determination to lead his team was further underscored by his record of 13 goals this season, making him the team’s top scorer.
As Aguirre approached the penalty spot, he felt the pressure but remained focused. “I was a little nervous at first, but I also know at the end of the day, it’s just a game,” he reflected. His confidence and commitment to the sport shone through as he executed the winning kick.
Aguirre’s younger brother, sophomore defender Gavin Aguirre, has witnessed his sibling’s competitive spirit from childhood. “I had all the faith in him because this is what he has always been about,” Gavin remarked, emphasizing their shared history in soccer.
The senior forward, who stands at 6-foot-1, possesses not only physical prowess but also a strategic mindset. “I see the game like math,” Aguirre noted, analyzing plays and player strengths with precision.
Looking ahead, Aguirre is determined to make the most of this opportunity. “This might be my last chance. It’s do or die, and I need to go into every game at 100%,” he said, signaling his commitment to finish his high school career with a bang.
As West Aurora gears up for the regional final, all eyes will be on Aguirre, who has proven to be a pivotal player in this thrilling playoff run. Fans and teammates alike will be watching closely to see if he can continue to deliver in this critical moment of the season.
