Political Shakeup in Utah County: Mayoral Races Show Big Shifts
BREAKING: Preliminary results from the 2025 general municipal election in Utah County are revealing a significant political shakeup that could dramatically change local leadership. As of late Tuesday night, new mayors are poised to take charge in key cities, replacing incumbents who chose not to run or were defeated by challengers.
In Vineyard, entrepreneur Zack Stratton leads with a commanding 58% of the vote against City Councilwoman Mardi Sifuentes, who trails with 41%. This marks a notable shift as outgoing Mayor Julie Fullmer, who has held office for eight years, announced her decision not to seek reelection amid criticism from opponents, including Councilman Jacob Holdaway, who accused her of corruption.
Stratton’s potential victory could signal a new direction for the city, especially with his backing from Holdaway. This election also included a new council seat following Proposition 10’s approval last year, which added an additional member to the council. In this race, Parker McCumber is currently leading with 21% of the votes, closely followed by Jacob Wood and David Lauret with 20.6% and 20.2% respectively.
Meanwhile, in Orem, the race is heating up as Mayor David Young faces a tough challenge from Karen McCandless, who has garnered 52% of the preliminary votes compared to Young’s 47%. McCandless, a former City Council member and current CEO of Community Action Services and Food Bank, is advocating for change in a city where Young has promoted a strict anti-high-density housing agenda.
Young’s tenure has been marked by controversy, particularly surrounding a failed initiative for an Orem-only school and scrutiny regarding his family ties to a million-dollar scandal. As this race unfolds, the implications for Orem’s future governance are profound.
These elections are poised to reshape the political landscape of Utah County, impacting local policies and community dynamics significantly. As results continue to be reported, residents eagerly await the final tallies that will confirm the direction their cities are headed.
Stay tuned for more updates as these pivotal races unfold.
