Lou Gehrig’s Final Yankees Jersey Fetches Record $2.7M at Auction

BREAKING: Lou Gehrig’s iconic jersey from his final appearance at Yankee Stadium has just sold for a staggering $2.712 million at auction, marking a historic moment in sports memorabilia. This record-setting sale took place as part of an auction hosted by Christie’s and Hunt Auctions, featuring items from the collection of Dr. G.B. Espy.
The jersey worn by Gehrig during Game 2 of the 1939 World Series is not just a piece of clothing; it represents the legacy of the legendary player who was diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) that same year. Gehrig played only eight games in the 1939 season before his retirement, ending his remarkable streak of 2,130 consecutive games. He remained with the Yankees, assisting with lineup cards for umpires until his death on June 2, 1941.
This jersey, meticulously photo-matched by MeiGray Authenticated, was the last one Gehrig wore at home, a poignant reminder of his enduring spirit. The garment was preserved for over 50 years by a dry cleaner who recognized its historical significance when it was mistakenly sent for minor league use by the Newark Bears.
In the same auction, a bat likely used during Gehrig’s final World Series game in 1938 sold for $1.197 million, while Jackie Robinson’s Baseball Hall of Fame ring fetched $693,000, both prices including buyer’s premiums.
This momentous auction highlights the deep emotional connection fans have with sports history, illustrating how items like Gehrig’s jersey transcend time, symbolizing hope and resilience. As the sports world watches, this sale has set a new benchmark for memorabilia, reminding us of Gehrig’s legacy and the impact he continues to have on baseball and beyond.
Stay tuned for more updates as the significance of this auction continues to resonate throughout the sports community.
