UPDATE: New Orleans Pelicans center Kevon Looney has been diagnosed with a left knee injury, sidelining him for at least two to three weeks. The Pelicans confirmed this urgent news on Wednesday, detailing the injury as a proximal tibiofibular ligament sprain. This setback comes just days before the team’s regular season opener on October 22 against the Memphis Grizzlies.

The injury occurred during a preseason exhibition game in Australia against the South East Melbourne Phoenix on October 5. As a key player entering his 11th NBA season, Looney was expected to play a crucial role following his offseason acquisition by the Pelicans, under the direction of new executive vice president of basketball operations, Joe Dumars.

Looney, standing at 6 feet 9 inches, has a notable history, being part of three championship-winning teams with the Golden State Warriors. Throughout his career, he has averaged 5 points and 5.7 rebounds per game, bringing valuable experience to the Pelicans.

With Looney out, the Pelicans will turn to rookie center Yves Missi, a first-round draft choice from Baylor. Missi had a strong rookie season, playing in 73 games and starting 67, where he averaged 9.1 points, 8.2 rebounds, and 1.3 blocks in 26.8 minutes per game. His performance will be critical as the Pelicans navigate the early part of the season without their new addition.

This injury raises immediate concerns for the Pelicans as they prepare for their season opener in just 17 days. Fans and analysts alike will be watching closely to see how the team adjusts in the absence of Looney, emphasizing the importance of a strong start as they aim for a successful season.

Stay tuned for further updates on Looney’s recovery and the Pelicans’ strategies as they approach the upcoming games.
