Islam Makhachev Captures Welterweight Title in Unanimous Decision
UPDATE: Islam Makhachev has achieved his dream of becoming a two-division champion, dominating Jack Della Maddalena to win the welterweight title at UFC 322 on October 21, 2023, at Madison Square Garden in New York. The fight ended with a unanimous decision after Makhachev showcased his grappling prowess, controlling the match for nearly the entire duration.
In a stunning display, Makhachev outstruck Della Maddalena by a staggering 123-32 in significant strikes, using a series of calf kicks that left the champion visibly hobbled. Makhachev’s victory marks his 16th consecutive win, tying him with Anderson Silva for the longest winning streak in UFC history, further solidifying his status in the sport.
“This is the dream,” Makhachev said post-fight. “All my life I’ve fought for this. I worked hard for this moment.” His emphatic performance included a remarkable 19 minutes, 10 seconds of control time, completely neutralizing Della Maddalena’s offense.
Della Maddalena, now 18-3, had been on a winning streak since losing his first two pro MMA fights. However, Makhachev’s relentless approach left him with little recourse. “My life has changed,” Makhachev commented on his move to welterweight. “I didn’t have to cut weight. I can do what I want. It made this night easy.”
The fight’s trajectory was evident from the outset, with Makhachev executing every takedown attempt and keeping his opponent pinned on the canvas for extended periods. By the third round, Della Maddalena appeared resigned to his fate, though he managed to avoid a finish.
“This was my plan, and it’s not a secret,” Makhachev added. “All of my opponents know this, but nobody can stop it.” His decisive victory not only cements his legacy as one of the greatest lightweights in UFC history but also sets the stage for his entry into a highly competitive welterweight division.
Looking ahead, Makhachev is already eyeing future challenges. “Open the White House,” he declared, referencing the UFC’s anticipated big event targeted for 2026. With his sights set on further accomplishments, fans and analysts alike are eager to see what comes next for the newly crowned champion.
As the MMA world buzzes with excitement over Makhachev’s latest triumph, his journey continues to inspire fighters and fans around the globe. Stay tuned for further updates on this developing story and Makhachev’s future in the octagon.
