Indiana Awards $42M for Recycling; New PNW License Plate Launches
UPDATE: Indiana has just announced a groundbreaking initiative to enhance recycling efforts across the state, awarding $42 million in grants to six organizations, including Goodwill Industries of Michiana, Inc. The funding is expected to create 42 jobs and divert nearly 197,884 tons of materials from landfills each year, underscoring a significant step toward environmental sustainability.
The grants, administered by the Indiana Department of Environmental Management, will see Goodwill receive $301,011 to increase its recycling capacity by diverting an additional 32,812 tons of recyclable material annually. Other key recipients include CT Polymers in Marshall County ($500,000), Greencycle in Marion County ($453,989), and Nexus IN RNG in LaPorte County ($500,000), among others.
In another significant development, Governor Mike Braun has appointed several residents from Lake, Porter, and LaPorte counties to various state boards and commissions. Notable appointments include Elizabeth Bergeron to the Indiana Protection and Advocacy Services Commission and Thomas Collins to the Gary/Chicago International Airport Authority Board of Directors. These appointments reflect the state’s commitment to local representation and governance.
Additionally, Indiana Dunes Tourism is launching a new grant program with $50,000 available for community projects, marketing initiatives, and events that draw visitors to Porter County. The application deadline is December 1, 2023, with recipients set to be announced on January 5, 2024. Eligible organizations include local government entities and nonprofits, making this an excellent opportunity for community engagement and development.
In healthcare news, Dr. Marrium Siddiqui, an infectious disease physician, has joined the Franciscan Physician Network in Crown Point, accepting new patients immediately. Dr. Siddiqui, who completed her medical training at Lincoln Memorial University, is poised to enhance local health services in the region.
Moreover, applications for the Northwest Indiana Influential Women Association’s mentorship program are now open until December 3, 2023. This program aims to empower women leaders through structured mentorship, aligning with the organization’s mission to foster professional growth.
Lastly, Purdue University Northwest is set to launch a new specialty license plate in January 2024. This initiative allows Indiana residents to display their school spirit while contributing to scholarships for PNW students. Each plate will carry a fee of $40, with $25 of that directly supporting student scholarships.
