Tyler Shough Takes the Helm as Saints’ Starting Quarterback
The New Orleans Saints have named rookie quarterback Tyler Shough as their starter for the upcoming game against the Arizona Cardinals on September 7, 2025. This decision marks a significant moment for the 26-year-old, who was selected 40th overall in April’s NFL Draft. Shough’s journey to this point has been filled with challenges, but he remains optimistic about his opportunity in New Orleans.
Shough has been buoyed by messages of support from notable figures, including former Saints quarterback Drew Brees and Archie Manning, a legendary name in New Orleans football. Manning has a unique understanding of the pressures facing Shough, as he was the last quarterback selected by the Saints in the top 50 picks, being chosen second overall in 1971. As the team prepares for its season opener, Shough aims to make his mark as the seventh rookie quarterback to start for the Saints.
Having played at three universities—Oregon, Texas Tech, and Louisville—Shough brings a wealth of experience, including overcoming three major injuries during his college career. Despite setbacks, including two season-ending injuries, he has maintained a positive outlook. “It worked out the way it was supposed to because now I’m in [this] opportunity with a great team,” he stated, reflecting on his journey.
Shough’s path has not been easy. Following two seasons as a backup at Oregon, he transferred to Texas Tech, where he faced significant injury challenges, including a broken collarbone and a severe leg injury. Yet, his resilience has defined his career. “It was just a lot of true ups and downs,” he said, acknowledging the emotional toll these experiences took on him.
In July, Shough expressed his determination during an exclusive interview, saying, “I feel so much more ready to come into this situation.” He credits his wife, Jordan Shough, for her unwavering support throughout his struggles. She described her husband’s strength and positivity, emphasizing his belief that things would work out for him. “He just has this kind of unwavering sense of self about him that is pretty remarkable,” Jordan noted.
Transitioning to Louisville for his final collegiate season proved to be a turning point for Shough. He started all 12 games, achieving career highs with 23 passing touchdowns and 3,195 passing yards. His performance earned him a spot in the Senior Bowl and solidified his status as a draft prospect.
Shough’s family background has played a crucial role in shaping his character. His parents, both athletes, instilled in him a strong work ethic and determination. His mother, Dana, who battled Stage 4 breast cancer for nearly two decades, served as an inspiration. “When stuff gets tough, that’s when you got to dig deep and get some grit,” she advised, emphasizing the importance of resilience.
As he embarks on this new chapter with the Saints, Shough is keenly aware of the competition he faces. Teammates Spencer Rattler and Jake Haener are also vying for the starting quarterback position. Coach Kellen Moore stated, “Everyone wants to be out there on Sundays as a starting quarterback in the NFL. That’s every quarterback’s goal and dream.” Shough’s strong performance in training camp will be crucial as the season approaches.
The camaraderie he has developed with teammates is essential to Shough’s integration into the team. His early efforts to bond with players, including workouts and social outings, have set a positive tone. “It’s really big when it comes to being around people,” he remarked, highlighting the importance of relationships in football.
As the preseason unfolds, Shough’s work ethic and passion for the game remain evident. He is committed to making the most of this opportunity in New Orleans. “If you fall in love with each day of going into work and having fun with that, then usually the results are good,” he explained.
With the support of his family, teammates, and the New Orleans community, Shough is ready to embrace the challenges ahead. If he secures the starting role, it will be a testament to his resilience and hard work. Regardless of the outcome, he aims to be known as a dedicated teammate and a positive influence in the locker room. “I just want to be known as a guy that worked hard and was a good dude in the locker room,” he stated, setting his sights on a bright future in the NFL.
