Texas A&M Welcomes Rising Star Rueben Dominguez to Aggies
Texas A&M University is set to feature a promising new talent in its basketball program this season. Rueben Dominguez, a 22-year-old guard standing at 6-foot-6, joins the Aggies after an impressive professional career in Spain. With four years of experience and accolades including the 2019 FIBA World Championship MVP, Dominguez is eager to make an impact in College Station, Texas.
Transition to College Basketball
Dominguez’s transition to collegiate basketball was facilitated by the efforts of the Texas A&M coaching staff, particularly associate head coach Mitch Cole. Dominguez shared that their communication was key in his decision to join the Aggies. “I had some contact with Mitch Cole,” he explained. “It was a long way with the visa and stuff, but since the end of my season, we were talking about it, and I was really excited to come here.”
The decision to shift from professional basketball in Spain to the NCAA was not made lightly. Dominguez recognized the unique opportunities presented by the NCAA, particularly in light of the Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) policies. He stated, “I think it has changed a little bit. With the NIL, it’s a big opportunity to change my life, my family’s life.” This transition not only aims to elevate his game but also his personal growth.
Embracing a New Style of Play
Dominguez is enthusiastic about the fast-paced style of play that head coach Bucky McMillan emphasizes. “His play style is all I’m looking for,” Dominguez remarked. “It’s just playing fast, like at high volume of possessions, of threes, of course.” The emphasis on full-court pressing and a high tempo was another major draw for Dominguez as he joins a program with a different approach than what he experienced in Spain.
His background in basketball has shaped his skills, particularly in shooting. Dominguez has honed his three-point shooting abilities to an elite level, a talent he developed from a young age. “When I was a kid, I already had something natural,” he noted. “There was one summer…I was practicing with my eyes closed. Shooting with my eyes closed. Threes. Everything. From there, it has always been my first weapon.”
As Dominguez prepares for his debut with the Aggies, he acknowledges how the supportive environment at Texas A&M has been instrumental in his transition. “The work they do here, I now realize how good and how important it is for me to be here and grow as a person and as a player,” he reflected.
The Aggies will host their home opener on November 3, 2023, at 7 p.m. at Reed Arena. With Rueben Dominguez on the roster, Texas A&M fans can expect an exciting season ahead as he steps onto the court and begins his journey in collegiate basketball.
