After a promising start to the season, the future of wide receiver Adonai Mitchell with the Indianapolis Colts is shrouded in uncertainty following a costly mistake in a game against the Los Angeles Rams. While the Colts secured six victories in their first seven games, Mitchell’s moment of misfortune—a lost touchdown opportunity that turned into a touchback—has left him grappling with his role in the team’s offense. This occurred during the Colts’ 27-20 loss on September 28, 2023.

In a recent interview with James Boyd of The Athletic, Mitchell expressed his desire for redemption as the November 4 trade deadline approaches. “You kinda get lost when you don’t get that opportunity, so I’ve just been trying to cherish every moment and just make the most of every moment I get because I don’t know when I’m gonna get that chance again,” he stated. His focus now is on making the most of whatever opportunities may arise.

Mitchell’s Playing Time Declines

Since the mistake against the Rams, Mitchell’s playing time has significantly diminished. According to data from Pro Football Reference, he participated in only six snaps during the Colts’ 40-6 victory over the Las Vegas Raiders in Week 5. He was inactive for the Week 6 game against the Arizona Cardinals, and returned to play just five snaps in the 38-24 win against the Los Angeles Chargers on October 19.

Mitchell, a 2024 second-round draft pick, is currently on a rookie contract that extends through the 2027 season. His passion for the game is evident, as he remarked, “This is all I ever done, dog. This is pretty much the only thing I’ve ever really found joy in besides just being around my family.” He emphasized the importance of not taking this opportunity for granted, as he is determined to make it work.

Confronting Adversity

Mitchell’s feelings of regret linger, particularly regarding his performance against the Rams. Following that game, he took the initiative to address his teammates during a locker room meeting, acknowledging the need for accountability. “We were going to meet about it anyway, and that’s pretty much the only way to get through it,” Mitchell shared. “First, you have to acknowledge what you did wrong and take accountability. I know people want to ask me like, ‘Do I still look back at that? Do I still think it’s my fault?’ Hell yeah, I do. There ain’t a moment when I don’t think about it.”

This week, the Colts are set to host the Tennessee Titans, who currently hold a 1-6 record. As of Friday afternoon, ESPN BET has listed Indianapolis as a 14.5-point favorite, hinting at a potential blowout. Mitchell recognizes the weight of the situation, stating, “This is the most adversity I’ve ever faced, pretty much at the top of where I always wanted to get to (in football)… I’d be a liar if I said it doesn’t get to me. I’m human.”

As the Colts prepare for their upcoming game, Mitchell’s journey serves as a reminder of the challenges athletes face and the resilience required to overcome setbacks. His determination to turn the page may not only shape his career but also impact the Colts’ performance moving forward.
