A Melbourne nursery is under fire following a rejection message sent to a Jewish job applicant that included alleged antisemitic remarks. The incident has led to public protests and a formal apology from The Garden of Eden Nursery, located in Albert Park, Melbourne.

The controversy began when a 24-year-old Jewish woman, who has chosen to remain anonymous, applied for a position at the nursery. After receiving a rejection message, she expressed that she was “shocked and deeply disappointed” by the hostility conveyed in the text. The message reportedly stated that the position had been filled by “someone with a semblance of humanity” and included remarks suggesting the woman should “leave the country.” This reaction came shortly after she had relocated to Australia, hoping for a welcoming environment.

Brett Dahan, co-owner of The Garden of Eden Nursery, allegedly sent the message, which included inflammatory remarks such as “Free Palestine and end genocide NOW. You’re complicit in IT.” Following this, civil rights activists condemned the message as “repugnant,” prompting a protest outside the nursery, where demonstrators expressed their outrage.

In a phone interview with the *Herald Sun*, Dahan claimed he was unsure of why he had sent the message and did not provide further clarification. The incident has drawn significant attention from the Jewish community, with calls for accountability and action against the nursery.

Australia’s Equal Opportunity Act prohibits discrimination against job applicants based on nationality. In response to the backlash, The Garden of Eden Nursery, run by twin brothers Brett and Scott Dahan, issued a public apology on March 3, 2024. The statement expressed regret over the “recent message sent to a member of the public by a staff member,” emphasizing that the content did not reflect the values of their business.

“We are deeply upset and disappointed by the content of the message, which in no way reflects the values, standards, or spirit of our business or team,” the nursery stated. The company indicated that the matter is under internal review.

Dr. Dvir Abramovich, Chairman of the Anti-Defamation Commission, criticized the nursery’s apology. He remarked that true accountability would involve more than a public statement, suggesting that the business should be held accountable by closing its operations. “Mr. Dahan’s repugnant text wasn’t a slip. It was a deliberate, written act meant to humiliate and degrade,” Abramovich stated on social media. He emphasized that the woman deserves a direct and personal apology from Dahan.

The incident highlights ongoing tensions surrounding antisemitism and discrimination in Australia, prompting discussions about accountability and the treatment of individuals based on their nationality.

As the situation develops, the Jewish community continues to advocate for greater awareness and action against such discriminatory practices, calling for a culture of respect and inclusion. The Garden of Eden Nursery has not yet responded to requests for further comment on the situation.
