Historic Log Cabin Transformed into Unique Airbnb Retreat
A historic log cabin in central Pennsylvania has been revitalized into a distinctive Airbnb property, offering guests a unique blend of rustic charm and modern amenities. The transformation of this cabin, located at 1134 South Mountain Road in Franklin Township, took over two years under the careful stewardship of owner Missy Halko. Unlike typical homes featured by Cool Spaces, this property is available exclusively for rental.
The cabin boasts a rich history, tracing its origins back to the late 1700s or early 1800s. It was originally built by the Heikes family, among the first settlers in the region, who owned a significant expanse of land. Historical accounts suggest that the cabin may have played a role in the Underground Railroad, serving as a refuge for escaping slaves. According to Halko, two potential escape routes are documented: one leading through Chambersburg and Carlisle, and another through the dense woodlands to the east of the mountain.
Restoration efforts involved meticulous attention to detail, preserving the cabin’s historical elements while modernizing its structure. The process included demolishing certain areas and keeping the original footprint intact, reusing components where possible. Upgrades such as foundation support, a new roof, and a front porch were integral to the renovation. Notable salvaged pieces include a 1930s Matthew Engman wood stove and original floorboards, which were donated to local artisans.
Modern conveniences have been seamlessly integrated into the cabin, with new electric, plumbing, and HVAC systems installed. The exterior features a combination of original wood siding and new pine shiplap, stained and painted black for a contemporary aesthetic. Interior enhancements included extensive drywalling, tiling, and meticulous painting that took approximately eight months to complete.
The first floor showcases open ceilings with exposed original floor joists, hand-hewn log walls, and weathered wide plank wood floors. The kitchen, while updated, retains an antique feel with a gas ILVE Italian stove, vintage appliances, and thoughtfully chosen color schemes that echo colonial design. Antique furniture pieces, such as a barley twist table and various dressers, complement the modern decor.
Upstairs, two spacious bedrooms await guests, one preserving its original form with exposed ceilings and logs, while the other sports a cathedral ceiling with a slightly contemporary touch. A twisting staircase leads to a loft area that overlooks the main room, enhancing the cabin’s inviting atmosphere.
Outdoor spaces are equally impressive, featuring a large covered pavilion that extends the living area and accommodates up to eight for dining. The pavilion includes a gas grill, propane fire pit table, and a 65-inch television, making it ideal for gatherings. Unique elements, such as supports made from upcycled electric poles, add character to the structure.
The cabin’s backyard is designed for relaxation, complete with a hot tub, picnic area, and fire pit. A pond, an outhouse, and a four-person camper enhance the property, allowing families to enjoy a camping experience right at their doorstep. “The camper pad on the property allows folks to bring more family and friends or have a camping experience for the kiddos,” noted Halko.
Surrounded by wooded landscapes, guests can expect to encounter local wildlife, including deer and turkeys, enriching their stay in this serene environment. The transformation of this historic log cabin not only preserves a piece of Pennsylvania’s heritage but also offers a unique escape for those seeking a blend of history and nature.
