Angel Reese Makes History as First Athlete at Victoria’s Secret Show

WNBA player Angel Reese has made history by becoming the first professional athlete to walk the runway at the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show, which took place on March 6, 2024. This event marks a significant shift for the lingerie brand, which has faced challenges in recent years and is now striving to redefine its image. Reese, who plays for the Chicago Sky, shared the spotlight with renowned supermodels such as Bella and Gigi Hadid, alongside a diverse array of models that included transgender, pregnant, and plus-size individuals.
The return of the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show, following a six-year hiatus, reflects the brand’s commitment to inclusivity and diversity. This year’s lineup included notable figures like Jasmine Tookes, who made a striking entrance in a gold macrame dress while visibly pregnant, as well as other plus-size models such as Paloma Elsesser and Ashley Graham. The diversity displayed during the event contrasts sharply with the brand’s past practices, which often featured primarily slim, white models.
In a candid moment backstage, Reese expressed her excitement and ambition, noting that she had “manifested this moment” after attending last year’s show. “I posted on my Instagram Story last year, when I was here at the show watching front row. I said, ‘I’m gonna be a Victoria’s Secret model one day,’” she shared, adding that she was surprised it came to fruition so quickly.
The Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show was once a major televised event, drawing millions of viewers. However, its popularity waned, with viewership dropping from 9.7 million in 2013 to just 3.3 million in 2018, ultimately leading to its cancellation in 2019. This decline was attributed to criticism of the brand for perpetuating outdated beauty standards and failing to represent a wider array of body types and backgrounds.
In a bid to rejuvenate the brand, Hillary Super, the new CEO of Victoria’s Secret, has prioritized change since her appointment in August 2024. The company’s annual revenue saw a modest increase of 1%, reaching $6.23 billion last year, a small recovery after a decade marked by store closures and dwindling sales. Super’s leadership coincides with the launch of the VS Collective, a group of brand ambassadors advocating for body positivity and gender equality. Notable members include Megan Rapinoe and Olympic skier Eileen Gu, although Reese stands out as the only athlete to grace the runway.
Reese emphasized the importance of representation, stating, “A lot of young women are going to be watching me today to know that they have some inspiration and know that they can dream this big.” Her presence at the show illustrates a broader commitment to inclusivity, showcasing beauty in all forms.
The runway show featured a blend of traditional elements and modern sensibilities, with former Angels like Adriana Lima and Alessandra Ambrosio alongside unexpected newcomers such as Barbie Ferreira, previously known for her role in the series “Euphoria,” and YouTuber Quenlin Blackwell. Performances by Missy Elliott and Karol G added to the vibrant atmosphere, merging music and fashion in a celebration of diversity.
Reflecting on her experience, Reese stated, “I’m not going to shy away from looking like this because I work my ass off for this body. Being sexy is just something that I love and always embrace.” As the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show evolves, Reese’s participation marks a pivotal moment in the brand’s ongoing journey towards a more inclusive future.
