Google Enhances Security with New Features for Accounts and Messages

Google has introduced a series of new security features aimed at enhancing user protection for both Google Messages and Google accounts. These updates are designed to provide an additional layer of security and assist users in regaining access to their accounts if they become locked out.
One significant enhancement is the Trusted Contacts feature. This allows users to designate specific friends or family members who can assist them if they find themselves unable to access their Google account. The process is straightforward: users can send a code to their trusted contacts, who will then receive an email or notification to confirm the user’s identity by verifying the provided code. This method ensures that while trusted contacts can help, they do not gain any direct access to the user’s account. The setup for Trusted Contacts can be initiated through the Google account settings.
New Features in Google Messages
In addition to updates for Google accounts, Google Messages has also received two important security features: safer links and Key Verifier. The safer links feature warns users when they click on links within messages that may be spam. This precaution helps reduce the risk of inadvertently visiting harmful websites. If a user marks a message as “not spam,” the warning will not appear for that specific message, ensuring a smoother user experience.
The Key Verifier feature offers an added layer of security by allowing users to scan a QR code shared by their trusted contacts. This process helps confirm that end-to-end encrypted messages are truly private and sent to the intended recipient. Google has announced that Key Verifier is now accessible to all users operating on Android 10 and above, with plans for additional protective features based on Key Verifier in the near future.
These updates underscore Google’s commitment to enhancing user security across its platforms. Users are encouraged to explore these new features to take full advantage of the increased protection now available.
