Kareem Washington Shines with Four Sacks in Benicia’s Victory

Benicia High junior football player Kareem Washington delivered a standout performance, helping the Panthers secure a decisive 28-6 victory over College Park on October 20, 2023. Washington’s defensive prowess was on full display as he recorded four sacks and nine tackles, contributing significantly to the team’s continued success in the Diablo Valley League. With this win, Benicia remains undefeated in league play.

Washington expressed his eagerness to return to form after a challenging start to the season. “I hadn’t had a sack since Week 2, so I was becoming frustrated,” he noted. His first sack in the game came during the opening quarter, igniting his confidence and performance. “When I picked up my first sack of the game, it felt really good. Then, when I had my second sack, I began to get more confident,” he added. Washington utilized a double slight move and bull rush techniques that proved effective against his opponents.

One key factor in Washington’s performance was his mental approach to the game. “I have learned so much this year, but in the end, I just needed to free my mind and go out and just play,” he said. He emphasized the importance of quickness off the line, stating, “If I know my keys and strike quickly, then I can have success.” Washington’s commitment to studying game film also plays a crucial role in his preparation.

After a rocky start with an 0-3 record, the Panthers have rallied to win three consecutive games and five of their last six. Washington reflected on the team’s turnaround, crediting head coach C.J. Anderson for motivating the players during their struggles. “When we were 0-3, we really were down in the dumps as a team,” he shared. Anderson reminded the team that their goals remained within reach, encouraging them to persevere.

As the Panthers prepare to face Mt. Diablo on the road, Washington is focused on his personal goals. He hopes to achieve another double-digit sack season, stating, “I still have a few more games left to play, so I’m hoping I can still do that.”

Keilani Demas from American Canyon girls volleyball recorded 18 assists and eight digs in a playoff victory against Quarry Lane.
