San Francisco Man Convicted of Murdering 88-Year-Old Woman
UPDATE: In a landmark verdict, a jury has found Keonte Gathron guilty of murdering Yik Oi Huang, an 88-year-old woman, in a brutal attack during her morning walk in Visitacion Valley back in 2019. The San Francisco District Attorney’s office confirmed the verdict today, marking a significant moment in a case that has left the community in shock.
District Attorney Brooke Jenkins announced the verdict, stating, “We are pleased to announce Mr. Gathron has been found guilty of numerous counts. Most importantly in the murder of Mrs. Huang, an 88-year-old grandmother who was simply out doing her morning exercise.” This verdict comes after years of waiting for justice for Huang’s family, who have suffered immensely since the attack.
On January 3, 2020, Huang succumbed to her injuries at Laguna Honda Hospital, where she had been fighting for her life after the heinous attack. Gathron’s conviction includes 25 counts related to multiple violent incidents, including robbery and carjacking, with a disturbing pattern of targeting individuals of Asian descent.
Gathron’s crime spree included entering Huang’s home following the attack before fleeing the scene. He was arrested later while committing another robbery. Jenkins emphasized the severity of Gathron’s actions, stating, “The most pronounced is the murder of Mrs. Huang,” highlighting the broader impact of his criminal behavior on the community.
The park where Huang was attacked has since been renamed to honor her legacy, now known as The Yik Oi Huang Peace and Friendship Park. Community advocates aim for this renaming to foster healing and unity in the neighborhood.
Gathron now faces a potential life sentence, with sentencing set for a later date. This case has sparked significant discussions around violence against the elderly, particularly within Asian communities, emphasizing the need for vigilance and justice.
As this story develops, further updates will follow. The community continues to rally for justice and healing in the aftermath of this tragic event. Share this urgent news to spread awareness and support for those affected by violence.
