Virginia’s Gov. Spanberger Faces Immigration Challenges Ahead

Tom Homan, the former immigration enforcement chief under the Trump administration, expressed skepticism about potential collaboration with Virginia’s newly sworn-in Governor, Abigail Spanberger. During an interview on the conservative podcast “Ruthless,” Homan indicated that Spanberger, a Democrat, appears unlikely to engage with the federal government on immigration issues.

The tension follows Spanberger’s recent executive order, which states that local and state law enforcement agencies in Virginia are not mandated to cooperate with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). This action effectively repeals a directive from her Republican predecessor, Glenn Youngkin. Homan remarked, “I hope we can work together, but it doesn’t look good,” reflecting a growing divide between state and federal approaches to immigration enforcement.

In her inaugural remarks, Spanberger conveyed her intention to collaborate with the federal government on mutual priorities while emphasizing her obligation to the residents of Virginia. She stated, “When federal actions attack and threaten Virginia jobs, I will not hesitate to push back.” Her comments signal a commitment to protect local interests, particularly as issues related to immigration and employment come to the forefront.

Spanberger has previously represented Virginia’s 7th congressional district from 2019 to 2025, and her focus has remained on ensuring the safety and security of all Virginia residents, including “hardworking, law-abiding immigrant neighbors.” She articulated a philosophy instilled in her by her parents: when confronted with unacceptable situations, one must take action and advocate for change.

The backdrop of this political tension is significant. The Trump administration’s policies led to the elimination of numerous federal jobs, impacting many Virginia residents. As the state grapples with these changes, Spanberger’s leadership may be tested as she navigates federal relations while addressing local concerns.

Former President Donald Trump has made remarks regarding Spanberger, albeit infrequently. During the lead-up to the recent election, he expressed support for her Republican opponent, Winsome Earle-Sears, labeling Spanberger as a “disaster.” Trump stated, “I think the Republican candidate is very good, and I think she should win,” reflecting his preferences leading up to the election.

Despite the criticism, Spanberger secured victory against Earle-Sears by a margin exceeding 15% of the vote. Voter concerns regarding the economy, particularly among those affected by federal job losses, played a pivotal role in this outcome.

As Governor Spanberger embarks on her term, the challenges surrounding immigration policy and job stability will likely dominate her agenda. Her commitment to providing “predictability, steadiness, and an unrelenting focus on the people we serve” will be crucial as she works to balance state priorities with federal expectations.
