The Port of Los Angeles is on track to process 10 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) by the end of 2025, marking only the third time in its history that it will reach this milestone within a single year. Data released on November 18 reveals that the port handled more than 848,000 TEUs in October, reflecting a 4% decrease from September and a 6.3% drop compared to October 2024.

Despite these recent declines, the overall performance for the year remains strong. The port recorded a 2% increase in cargo volumes for the first ten months of 2025, processing over 8.6 million TEUs as of October 31. “With six weeks to go, we are within reach of the 10 million container unit mark for the year,” stated Gene Seroka, executive director of the Port of Los Angeles. He credited the port’s performance to the “skill and dedication of our waterfront workforce along with the terminal operators who keep this port running safely and efficiently every day.”

Looking ahead, Seroka anticipates a potential softening of cargo volumes in November and December compared to last year. In late 2024, retailers and manufacturers accelerated shipments in anticipation of tariffs expected from the incoming Trump administration. Currently, inventories ahead of the holiday season are “well-stocked,” which may reduce the need for a surge in cargo similar to the previous year.

The port’s ability to process significant volumes of cargo is critical not only for the local economy but also for international trade. As the primary gateway for goods entering the United States, the Port of Los Angeles plays a vital role in ensuring that consumer demands are met, especially during peak shopping seasons.

Seroka’s insights reflect a broader trend in the shipping industry, where fluctuations in cargo volumes can signal shifts in economic activity. With the holiday season approaching, stakeholders will be monitoring the port’s operations closely to gauge the state of the supply chain and overall economic health.

The performance of the Port of Los Angeles will continue to be a focal point for businesses and policymakers alike as they navigate the complexities of global trade dynamics.
