Popular Rapper Namewee Detained Following Influencer’s Death

A Malaysian court has ordered the detention of popular rapper Namewee, whose real name is Wee Meng Chee, as part of a murder investigation into the death of Taiwanese influencer Iris Hsieh. Hsieh, also known as Hsieh Yu-hsin, was discovered unresponsive in a hotel bathtub in Kuala Lumpur on October 22, 2023. Her death, initially categorized as a “sudden death,” has prompted police to reclassify the case as a murder inquiry.

Namewee, 42, voluntarily presented himself to authorities on Wednesday after being identified as a “person of interest” in the case. Hsieh, a 31-year-old influencer, was in Malaysia to discuss a commercial video that Namewee was set to direct, according to her social media manager. The manager informed the BBC that Hsieh’s family is unable to travel to Malaysia due to “severe disabilities.”

Following the discovery of Hsieh’s body, Namewee contacted emergency services shortly after midnight. The police arrested him on the same day after discovering nine blue pills believed to be ecstasy in the hotel room. Although Namewee denied using drugs, he tested positive for several controlled substances, including amphetamines, methamphetamine, ketamine, and THC, according to police reports cited by the BBC. He pleaded not guilty to the drug charges and was released on bail earlier this week.

Namewee’s lawyer, Joshua Tay, stated that the investigation is still ongoing, which led to the court granting an extension of Namewee’s remand for an additional three days. In a recent Instagram post, Namewee asserted his innocence, claiming that “the truth will speak for itself.”

The rapper has faced legal issues in the past, having been at the center of controversies in both Malaysia and China. He gained significant attention in 2007 for “Negarakuku,” a parody of the Malaysian national anthem that sparked outrage due to its lyrics. In 2021, he was blacklisted by Beijing following a Mandarin song that ridiculed Chinese nationalists, which garnered over 30 million views on YouTube.

Despite his contentious history, Namewee remains a celebrated hip-hop artist, actor, and filmmaker, particularly popular in China and Taiwan for his Mandarin songs. His distinctive style, often featuring a beanie and sunglasses, has contributed to his public persona.
