Kim Jong Un Promotes North Korea’s Tourism Amid Economic Struggles
In a recent showcase of North Korea’s tourism potential, **Kim Jong Un** posed with visitors at the newly renovated **Onpo Workers’ Recreation Center**, a luxury spa complex. This visit aimed to bolster tourism, particularly from Russia, which maintains a supportive relationship with North Korea’s isolated regime. The spa, now the country’s largest hot springs resort, had undergone extensive renovations ordered by Kim following a previous visit that left him dissatisfied.
The ribbon-cutting ceremony for the spa complex marked a significant moment in Kim’s ongoing efforts to transform North Korea’s tourism image. Recent images released by state media depict Kim testing the water at the facility while bathers enjoyed the amenities. This is not the first time Kim has engaged in promotional activities; previous appearances included inspecting luxury hotel accommodations and enjoying leisure activities with his daughter, **Kim Ju Ae**.
Tourism as a Revenue Source
Tourism represents a crucial avenue for generating foreign currency in a country facing severe economic challenges. North Korea ranks **118th out of 127** on the **World Hunger Index 2025**, highlighting the need for economic opportunities. The regime’s strict economic sanctions, stemming from its nuclear weapons program, limit its financial options. Thus, attracting tourists, particularly from allied nations like **China** and **Russia**, has become a priority.
The state news agency **KCNA** reported that Kim and his daughter toured various hotel rooms, assessing their quality and design. The report noted, “Going round bedrooms of hotels, cozy leisure spaces and commercial and public catering facilities, [Kim] appreciated that all elements are at a high level in terms of practicality, diversity and formative art to preserve their own attractiveness.” Such statements reflect the regime’s desire to project an image of progress and luxury.
Kim’s daughter, believed to be around 13 years old, is frequently seen accompanying her father during public engagements. While her name has not been officially confirmed by North Korean media, reports suggest she is referred to as Kim Ju Ae, a name popularized by former NBA player **Dennis Rodman**, who met her during a visit in 2013. The increasing visibility of Kim Ju Ae has led to speculation about her potential future role as a leader in North Korea.
Future Prospects for North Korean Tourism
The government aims to transform the **Paektu area**, known for its scenic beauty, into a major tourist destination. Officials have praised Kim’s commitment to enhancing the region, asserting that it offers “indescribable” natural landscapes. As North Korea seeks to recover economically, the tourism sector may provide a vital lifeline.
Despite the challenges posed by international sanctions, Kim’s promotions of luxury resorts and recreational facilities signal a strategic focus on tourism as a means of economic recovery. By catering to tourists from allied countries, North Korea hopes to create a sustainable revenue stream that can alleviate some of the pressures on its struggling economy.
As Kim Jong Un continues to unveil new attractions, the impact on North Korea’s economy and international relations will be closely observed by analysts and governments worldwide.
