German Bundestag Sets New Record for Longest Plenary Session

Germany’s lower house of parliament, the Bundestag, achieved a historic milestone by breaking its own record for the longest sitting during the current legislative period. The session commenced at 9 am on Thursday and stretched until 1:42 am on Friday, as vice president Omid Nouripour officially closed the meeting. This new record surpasses the previous one, which ended at 12:29 am in June.

The extended duration of Thursday’s session was largely due to an interruption initiated by the far-right party, Alternative for Germany (AfD). Around midnight, AfD representatives raised questions regarding whether the parliament still maintained a quorum. For the Bundestag to be deemed quorate, more than half of its 630 members must be present. Following a roll-call vote on the Veterinary Medicinal Products Act, the required minimum was confirmed, but the disruption delayed the conclusion of the session.
