Federal Agents Fire Weapons in Fatal Shooting of Nurse in Minneapolis

Two federal agents discharged their weapons during the fatal shooting of 37-year-old ICU nurse Alex Pretti in Minneapolis. This revelation came from a Customs and Border Protection (CBP) official, according to a notification sent to Congress. The information was confirmed by The Associated Press on January 9, 2024, following a preliminary review of body-worn camera footage and agency documentation.

The incident began when CBP officers attempted to take Pretti into custody, during which he allegedly resisted, resulting in a physical confrontation. An official stated that one officer repeatedly shouted, “He’s got a gun!” while both a Border Patrol agent and a CBP officer fired their weapons.

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) initially reported that Pretti approached the agents while armed with a 9mm semiautomatic handgun and two magazines. However, officials did not clarify whether he displayed the weapon. DHS commented, “The officers attempted to disarm the suspect, but the armed suspect violently resisted. Fearing for his life and the lives and safety of fellow officers, an agent fired defensive shots.” Medical assistance was rendered on-site, but Pretti was pronounced dead shortly after.

Governor Tim Walz has publicly criticized DHS for sharing information and posting a photo of the firearm on social media without a complete investigation. He described the information as unrelated to the shooting, stating, “It’s nonsense, people. It’s nonsense and it’s lies.”

Reports from CNN revealed that Pretti had a prior encounter with federal agents just a week before his death. This earlier incident involved Pretti stopping his vehicle to intervene when he observed Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents pursuing a family on foot. According to an anonymous source, Pretti confronted the agents, which led to a physical altercation where he allegedly suffered a broken rib. The source also noted that five agents tackled him, with one applying pressure to his back, resulting in the injury. Following the incident, the agents released Pretti at the scene.

Ongoing Protests Following Related Shooting

Protests have erupted in the Twin Cities area since January 7, 2024, after the fatal shooting of Renee Nicole Good by an ICE officer. The agent involved, identified as Jonathan Ross, fired his weapon after Good allegedly attempted to run him and other officers over with her SUV. Reports indicated that Ross sustained internal injuries from the incident.
