Will Smith Sparks Dodgers’ Victory with Key Home Run in World Series
UPDATE: Will Smith’s resurgence is transforming the Los Angeles Dodgers’ trajectory in the World Series, as he hit a pivotal tie-breaking home run during Game 2 against the Toronto Blue Jays, leading to a 5-1 victory on October 14, 2023. This crucial win evens the best-of-seven series at one game apiece.
After missing the final three weeks of the regular season due to a hairline fracture in his right hand, Smith has swiftly made up for lost time. Despite not starting in the National League wild-card series, he has showcased his skills in the postseason, boasting a remarkable .314 batting average and 11 hits, the highest among Dodgers with at least 10 at-bats.
The series now shifts back to Dodger Stadium, where the Dodgers will look to capitalize on their home-field advantage in the next game. “We’re 1-1 right now. So we’re heading back to L.A. trying to win three more,” Smith said after the game, reflecting the urgency of the upcoming matches.
Smith’s performance on Saturday included a game-changing solo homer in the seventh inning, a 404-foot drive just inside the left-field foul pole. This marked his first extra-base hit of the playoffs, signaling that his recovery from injury may finally be complete. He finished the game with three RBIs, contributing significantly to the Dodgers’ momentum.
Manager Dave Roberts highlighted the importance of Smith’s time off, stating, “That week off, I think, got him over the hump,” indicating that the break allowed Smith to heal from the wear and tear of the regular season.
Despite physical challenges, Smith maintained a strong mental approach, focusing on simplicity in his at-bats. “I’m just trying not to do too much,” he noted. “You can let the emotions get the best of you [and] try to hit a homer every time, or be the hero every time. It doesn’t work out.”
In a critical moment against Toronto pitcher Kevin Gausman, Smith displayed poise and determination, ultimately connecting for the decisive home run. “It’s a big swing, obviously,” Smith said. “The emotion is running high, but I’m also trying to get the guys going; just trying to keep that momentum going for us.”
Smith’s influence extends beyond his offensive contributions. He has also played a vital role in guiding Dodger pitchers through the playoffs, enhancing their performance and maintaining a calm demeanor in pressure situations. “The game-calling, the relationship with the pitchers, has continued to get better,” Roberts added.
This World Series marks Smith’s third appearance, and he is determined to secure his third championship ring. “It’s fun. It’s pressure baseball,” he remarked, encapsulating the high-stakes atmosphere that defines postseason play.
As the Dodgers prepare for Game 3, all eyes will be on Smith and his continued impact on the team’s pursuit of victory. The urgency of the moment is palpable as the Dodgers aim to seize control of the series at home.
