UPDATE: Valley residents are making a significant impact on local economies by supporting small businesses during Small Business Saturday, held on November 25, 2023. Streets in Old Town Clovis transformed into a festive winter wonderland as shoppers flocked to find unique holiday deals, driving a surge in foot traffic.

Shoppers like Heather Martinez expressed their excitement about discovering one-of-a-kind antiques. “Everyone’s antique shopping right here in Clovis, which is great. The weather is great, the venues are amazing,” Martinez said. She stumbled upon a beautiful piece she described as something “you can’t get that anywhere else,” highlighting the special treasures available at local shops.

Martinez, a lifelong resident, emphasized the importance of supporting local businesses: “This is my area, of course I’m going to support small businesses, that’s how it’s supposed to be.” Her sentiments reflect a growing trend as consumers realize the value of shopping small.

One such local entrepreneur, Tom Frost, owner of Frost Oak Creek Creations, highlighted the crucial role that the holiday season plays in his business. “I would say the holiday season is about a third of your business for the year,” Frost noted. His store features hard-to-find items like Charlie Bears and unique holiday decor, drawing eager shoppers looking for special gifts.

The impact of Small Business Saturday extends beyond Clovis. At Manchester Mall in central Fresno, local merchants stressed that every purchase from small businesses could make a life-changing difference. Lani, owner of the Shake & Sip Lemonade Stand, explained, “Big box stores treat you just like another number, but you might be paying for someone’s meal if you’re buying from a small business.”

While this day is dedicated to promoting local commerce, business owners express gratitude for customer support year-round. The holiday shopping season is a pivotal time for small businesses, and the community’s enthusiasm is palpable.

As shoppers continue to explore local shops, the message is clear: supporting small businesses not only enhances the holiday spirit but also strengthens the community. With the Christmas season approaching, consumers are encouraged to keep this momentum going by choosing local.
