Urgent Winter Weather Advisory: Up to 5 Inches of Snow Expected
UPDATE: A winter weather advisory has been issued for Southern Erie by the National Weather Service, effective from 6 p.m. today until 7 a.m. Monday. Residents can expect total snow accumulations of 3 to 5 inches, accompanied by winds gusting as high as 35 mph.
The heaviest snowfall is projected to occur late this evening, with peak rates reaching up to 1 inch per hour. This advisory signals a significant risk for slippery road conditions that could severely impact the morning commute.
Officials urge motorists to exercise extreme caution while traveling. “Plan on hazardous conditions that could lead to delays and accidents,” warns the weather service. The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation and Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission advise drivers to adjust speeds according to road conditions and remain vigilant.
Winter weather is notorious for making driving hazardous, contributing to over 6,000 weather-related vehicle fatalities and more than 480,000 injuries annually. As temperatures hover near freezing, it is crucial to assume that roads may be icy.
In anticipation of dangerous conditions, authorities recommend avoiding travel if possible. If you must go out, choose routes with fewer trees and power lines to minimize risks from falling branches or downed power lines. Remember, if you encounter a downed power line, do not touch it and call 911 immediately.
To ensure safety during winter travel, the National Weather Service suggests the following tips:
– **Share Your Travel Plans**: Inform family or friends of your route and expected arrival time.
– **Prepare Your Vehicle**: Keep your gas tank full and equip your car with a windshield scraper, jumper cables, a small shovel, flashlight, cell phone, blanket, extra clothing, drinking water, and high-calorie snacks.
– **Stay Calm When Stranded**: If you become stuck, stay in your vehicle and signal for help by attaching a cloth to your antenna or mirror. Use your dome light and flashers to increase visibility.
– **Be Aware of Snow Plows**: Give snow plows plenty of space and only pass them when you’re sure the road ahead is clear.
– **Check Road Conditions**: Always verify the latest road conditions before embarking on your journey.
As this situation develops, stay tuned for updates and prioritize your safety during this winter weather event. Share this information with others to help keep your community informed and safe.
