Urgent Update: Seasonal Affective Disorder Affects Millions This Winter
URGENT UPDATE: As winter approaches, millions are facing the psychological impacts of Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD). New reports confirm that shorter days and reduced sunlight significantly affect mood, sparking a rise in mental health challenges.
Health experts estimate that approximately 5% of adults suffer from SAD, a condition that typically surfaces in late fall or early winter. Sarah Esparza, a licensed Marriage & Family Therapist with Kaiser Permanente Fresno, emphasizes the compounded effects of disrupted routines and diminishing sunlight.
“The overwhelm, the disruption of schedules, it’s that kind of recipe for struggle and a difficult time,” said Esparza. This condition can particularly impact individuals already managing mental health disorders, limiting access to their usual coping mechanisms.
As the time change brings on earlier darkness, those affected may find their established strategies for managing anxiety and depression increasingly difficult to maintain.
Experts highlight the importance of Vitamin D intake and light therapy as effective management techniques. However, Esparza urges a comprehensive approach to combat SAD. “Trying to still do all the things that they’ve done throughout the rest of the year,” she advises. Maintaining structure, engaging in physical activity, and seeking daylight whenever possible are crucial steps.
Additionally, connection and communication with friends and family can significantly boost mood. “The interaction itself can increase those chemicals that relationally feel impactful for us,” Esparza noted.
If symptoms persist, health experts strongly recommend consulting healthcare providers to develop personalized treatment plans.
As winter looms, it’s essential to recognize the signs of SAD and take proactive measures for mental well-being. For more updates on mental health resources, follow local news outlets and health professionals.
