UPDATE: Major traffic changes are on the horizon for Saratoga as plans for a new Costco at Prospect and Lawrence in San José are set to increase local trips nearly 10-fold. Officials are urging residents to prepare for heightened traffic, particularly during weekends and evenings, as drivers seek the fastest routes to and from Highway 85.

With the arrival of October, Saratoga’s mayor, Belal Aftab, is issuing a critical safety reminder for pedestrians. He emphasizes the importance of visibility—advocating for reflective gear and small flashlights for those walking during dawn or dusk. “It makes a real difference in how early drivers see you,” Aftab stated.

The introduction of Costco is expected to exacerbate existing congestion in the area. “Traffic will not respect map lines,” Aftab warned. The new store lies outside Saratoga’s borders, but its impact on local neighborhoods and schools will be significant. This development comes as the city grapples with wide residential roads that lack sidewalks, inviting higher speeds from drivers.

Residents have reported frequent near-misses at key intersections, including Fruitvale Avenue and the ramps to and from Highway 85. “The morning tangle around schools is a hot spot,” Aftab noted, highlighting the need for immediate action.

To address these challenges, city officials have implemented several measures this year, including adding buffered bike lanes and refreshing crosswalks and striping. Solar beacons have also been installed at crucial crossings to enhance safety.

In a bid to foster community involvement, Aftab encouraged residents to model safe driving habits and report traffic concerns. “Some of our best ideas start with a resident’s email,” he said, urging citizens to propose fixes like edge-lining curves or adjusting crosswalk placements.

As the city anticipates the impact of Costco, Aftab emphasizes the importance of a balanced approach to traffic management. “Build for the speeds we want, then drive like the streets belong to our neighbors—because they do,” he asserted.

With these developments unfolding, Saratoga’s residents are reminded that a calmer community is a safer one. “Let’s take this cue to move with care,” Aftab concluded. As traffic patterns shift, the responsibility lies with both officials and residents to ensure safety remains a priority throughout the year.
