Sunnyvale Man Arrested for Assaulting Protesters on Highway 101
UPDATE: A Sunnyvale man was arrested after a violent confrontation at a pro-Palestinian vigil on the Highway 101 overpass, escalating tensions in the ongoing humanitarian discourse. The incident occurred just before 5:30 p.m. on November 7, when 41-year-old Joshua Krupia allegedly attacked demonstrators while cutting down flags and banners.
Eyewitnesses reported that Krupia approached the demonstration, which was organized by volunteers advocating for Gaza, and began hurling racist slurs and profanities. According to the Sunnyvale Department of Public Safety, the situation deteriorated rapidly into a physical altercation. Krupia used a pocketknife to sever the flags and engaged in a violent exchange, striking one individual in the head with a flashlight and another with his fist.
When law enforcement arrived at the scene, they found Krupia being detained by bystanders. He was subsequently arrested on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon and booked into Santa Clara County Jail.
CAIR-SFBA Director Zahra Billoo expressed outrage, stating,
“This was not just vandalism — it was a hate-motivated attack that left people injured while exercising their right to free expression.”
Billoo emphasized the importance of protecting community members advocating for Palestinian human rights and condemned the violence.
The incident has drawn significant attention, highlighting the growing tensions surrounding political demonstrations across the nation. As protests continue to occur, authorities are urging the public to remain peaceful and respectful towards differing viewpoints.
As investigations unfold, officials are expected to review surveillance footage from the overpass to gather more evidence. Community leaders are calling for justice and increased protections for peaceful assemblies.
Stay tuned for further updates on this developing story as authorities work to ensure the safety of all participants in demonstrations across the Bay Area.
