SMU Searches for New Offensive Coordinator After Casey Woods Exit
UPDATE: SMU is in urgent search for a new offensive coordinator following the announcement that Casey Woods has been hired as the next head coach for Missouri State. This transition comes just days before SMU’s Holiday Bowl game on January 2, 2024, where Woods will continue to coach the team.
With Woods’s departure, head coach Rhett Lashlee faces the critical task of filling a role he has closely collaborated with for nearly a decade. Under Woods, SMU’s offense ranked in the top-35 nationally for points and yards per game this season, highlighting the challenge ahead for Lashlee to maintain that level of performance.
The immediate focus will be on four potential candidates who could step up to the plate. The first contender is Jared King, currently serving as the Mustangs’ quarterback coach. At just 28 years old, King has quickly ascended within the SMU coaching staff, building a strong rapport with Lashlee during their time together at Miami. If promoted, King could bring fresh energy to the offensive unit, especially after successfully mentoring quarterbacks like Kevin Jennings and Preston Stone.
Another strong candidate is Sam Hullender, currently the assistant quarterbacks coach. Hullender is viewed as ready for a larger role and could ensure a smooth transition for the Mustangs’ offensive strategy.
Additionally, the return of Ryan Brewer to SMU could be a game-changer. Brewer previously served as the quarterbacks coach before taking the offensive coordinator position at Duke. His successful tenure at Duke, where he helped lead the team to an ACC title and developed standout quarterbacks, makes him a popular choice. His familiarity with Lashlee, stemming from their time together at Auburn and Miami, could reignite the potent offensive strategy at SMU.
Lastly, Beau Likens, currently the assistant head coach and wide receivers coach, has extensive experience and a history as an offensive coordinator at Kansas and Arizona State. Likens has demonstrated his ability to develop talent, notably mentoring Rashee Rice, who led the FBS in receiving yards per game this season.
As the clock ticks towards the Holiday Bowl, all eyes will be on the Mustangs to see which direction they take. The urgency to solidify a new offensive strategy is paramount for maintaining momentum and securing a successful postseason.
What’s next? SMU’s administration will need to act swiftly to finalize Woods’s replacement to ensure continuity and effectiveness on the field. Fans and stakeholders eagerly await updates on this crucial decision as the Mustangs prepare for their upcoming game.
