UPDATE: Rian Johnson has just confirmed that any future installments of the Knives Out series, including a potential Knives Out 4, hinge on his exclusive involvement as writer and director. In a recent interview with Variety, Johnson emphasized his unwavering commitment to the franchise, stating that he does not see it as mere intellectual property.

“If I am not the one making it, we won’t do another one,” Johnson declared, underscoring the personal nature of the project. This statement comes amid growing anticipation for the third film in the series, Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery, which had its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 6, 2025. The film is set to be released in select U.S. theaters today, November 26, 2025, before streaming on Netflix starting December 12, 2025.

Johnson revealed that he and lead actor Daniel Craig, who reprises his role as detective Benoit Blanc, are already brainstorming ideas for a possible sequel. “Creatively, I feel energized after making this one,” he stated, hinting at his enthusiasm for continuing the series. However, he firmly stated, “Absolutely not,” when asked if another filmmaker could take the reins of future films.

Johnson’s dedication to the Knives Out brand is evident in his assertion that if Craig decides to step away or lose interest, the series would come to an end. “It’s mine. They’ll have to pry it out of my cold, dead hands,” he said, showcasing his deep emotional connection to the franchise.

The original Knives Out film debuted in 2019, followed by Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery in 2022. As fans eagerly await the latest installment, Johnson’s conditions for future films may impact the franchise’s longevity. With his commitment and Craig’s involvement being so closely tied, the future of Knives Out remains uncertain yet intriguing.

As the premiere of the third film approaches, audiences worldwide are left to wonder: will Johnson and Craig collaborate again, or is this the last we’ll see of Benoit Blanc? Stay tuned for updates on this developing story.
