URGENT UPDATE: The No. 13 Minnesota State women’s hockey team faced an unexpected setback, falling 2-1 to Bemidji State during the US Hockey Hall of Fame Museum Women’s Faceoff Classic on February 17, 2024 in Grand Rapids, Minnesota.

The Mavericks struck first, with Taylor Otremba netting a goal at 9:17 of the first period, thanks to assists from Zoe Lopez and Mercury Bischoff. However, the momentum quickly shifted when Bemidji State (6-19-3, 3-18-1) responded with a power-play goal later in the period, leveling the score at 1-1.

Despite numerous scoring opportunities in the second period—including a power play following a boarding penalty on Bemidji State—the Mavericks (12-14-2, 6-14-2) struggled to convert. They also successfully killed off a penalty of their own, maintaining the tie heading into the final period.

“It was a tough WCHA game,” said associate head coach Jeff Giesen. “We had our chances, but we need to find a way to score some goals.”

The turning point came at 12:03 of the third period, when Bemidji State secured the go-ahead goal. In a desperate attempt to equalize, Minnesota State pulled goalie Hailey Hansen late in the game, applying significant pressure but ultimately falling short.

This loss marks a crucial moment for the Mavericks as they prepare to face St. Cloud State next Friday. Fans and players alike are eager to see how the team will respond after this disappointing performance.

Stay tuned for updates as the Mavericks aim to bounce back and regain their momentum on the road.
