New Predator: Badlands Hits Theaters with Major Universe Links
UPDATE: The highly anticipated film Predator: Badlands has just hit theaters, bringing a thrilling new chapter to the iconic franchise. Directed by Dan Trachtenberg, this latest installment offers a fresh perspective, intertwining the Predator and Alien universes in an unexpected way.
In Badlands, audiences follow the gripping journey of a young Predator named Dek, played by Dimitrius Schuster-Koloamatangi. Faced with the challenge of proving himself to his clan, Dek aims to hunt down a deadly creature known as the Kalisk on the perilous planet Genna. The stakes escalate when he crash-lands on this so-called “death planet,” realizing he may have underestimated the formidable foe he seeks.
Dek’s adventure takes a turn when he encounters Thia, portrayed by Elle Fanning, a synthetic android with a mission of her own. The duo forms an alliance, as Thia seeks to reclaim her severed lower half from the Kalisk’s lair. This alliance not only strengthens Dek’s resolve but also draws a direct line to the infamous Weyland-Yutani corporation from the Alien franchise.
In a shocking revelation, Thia was sent by Weyland-Yutani to capture the Kalisk, leading to a dramatic clash with her fellow android, Tessa, who prioritizes corporate loyalty over friendship. As the story unfolds, viewers witness Dek and Thia team up with a quirky alien sidekick named Bud, who adds a unique twist to their quest.
Producer Ben Rosenblatt emphasized this crossover’s innovative approach, stating, “We needed robots to tell this story without humans, allowing audiences to connect with Dek.” This fresh narrative choice marks a significant shift in the franchise, steering clear of human characters to focus on the Predator’s culture and code.
In a strategic move, Trachtenberg set Badlands at least 300 years into the future, ensuring no continuity conflicts with upcoming Alien projects like Alien: Romulus and Alien: Earth. By distancing the timeline, the film aims to carve out a unique space in both franchises.
As audiences dive into the film, Trachtenberg has hinted at future expansions of the Predator universe. He expressed excitement over potential sequels, sharing, “There are several cool ideas for the next chapter, each distinct from what’s been done before in sci-fi.” This dedication to innovation ensures fans remain engaged and eager for what’s next.
Moreover, there are whispers about the return of Arnold Schwarzenegger as Dutch in future installments, a move that could reignite nostalgia among long-time fans. Rosenblatt remarked, “Getting Arnold back would be the holy grail for Predator films.”
As Predator: Badlands continues to attract audiences, it’s clear that this chapter is just the beginning of an exciting evolution in the Predator franchise. Get ready for a cinematic experience that not only thrills but also expands the universe in ways fans have longed for.
Stay tuned for more updates as the film unfolds and discussions about its implications heat up across social media platforms.
