New Jersey Schools: Top Teacher Experience Revealed for 2023-24

URGENT UPDATE: New data from the New Jersey Department of Education reveals that the average public school teacher in New Jersey boasts 12.6 years of experience for the 2023-24 school year. This marks a slight increase from previous years, highlighting the wealth of knowledge educators bring to the classroom.

Among the schools leading the charge, the Central Park School, a special education institution in Morris County, stands out with an astounding average of over 26 years of teaching experience among its six full-time teachers. Meanwhile, the J. Garfield Jackson Sr. Academy in East Orange tops the general education category, where the 21 teachers hold an impressive average of 25.2 years in the field.

However, a concerning trend has emerged. The number of districts with less-experienced teachers is on the rise. In the current school year, 244 districts report an average teacher experience of less than 5 years. This shift raises questions about the impact of teacher experience on student outcomes.

Tabitha Dell’Angelo, a professor and Interim Dean of Urban Education at The College of New Jersey’s School of Education, emphasizes the importance of experienced educators. “Research suggests that as teachers gain experience, their students tend to show improvement in multiple ways,” she stated. However, she also highlighted that a supportive working environment is crucial for maximizing teacher effectiveness.

Dell’Angelo advocates for collaboration between seasoned and newer teachers, suggesting that mentorship and the exchange of innovative ideas can significantly enhance student learning. “This collaboration inevitably happens when new teachers coming out of high-quality teacher education programs bring a lot of innovative ideas and enthusiasm, which can be combined with the years of experience of the teachers already in the building,” she added.
