Metro Restaurants Offer Free Meals Amid SNAP Shutdown Crisis
UPDATE: As the federal government shutdown halts SNAP benefits, multiple restaurants in Oklahoma City are urgently providing free meals to families affected by the crisis. This initiative comes as thousands of Oklahomans find themselves without food assistance, forcing local businesses to step in and help their communities.
Taquitos Feliz, located at NW 23rd Street and MacArthur Blvd., has witnessed an overwhelming surge in customers this week. Owner Roberto Brambila reported a staggering increase in business, stating, “I’m pretty sure it was well over 100 people.” However, he emphasized that this increase does not translate to profit for his establishment. “No, not in this case,” Brambila added, acknowledging the financial strain of this generous outreach.
The shutdown, which cut off SNAP benefits at the start of October, has left many families struggling to feed their children. Brambila decided to take action. “I thought this was a really good opportunity for us to do something nice,” he said. Any parent who walks into Taquitos Feliz with at least one child and an EBT card can receive a full meal for free, choosing from tacos, burritos, or quesadillas.
The impact of this initiative resonates deeply within the community. Regular customer Gil Torres recognized the urgency of the situation and sought to contribute. After a quick visit to an ATM, Torres returned with a substantial cash donation for Brambila. “Thank you for what you’re doing,” he expressed, underscoring the importance of support during these challenging times.
The sentiment shared by Torres reflects a broader call for compassion amid political turmoil. “This isn’t a time to be political. It’s a time to be human,” he asserted, reminding everyone of the need to assist those in need.
In addition to Taquitos Feliz, other local eateries are joining the effort. Taco Casa locations across the metro are also offering free meals for children whose families present an EBT card at the register. Furthermore, Oliver’s Pizzeria has announced it will provide free large one-topping pizzas on Monday, October 9, from 2 to 6 p.m. to anyone with a valid SNAP or EBT card.
As the federal shutdown continues, the collective response from Oklahoma City’s restaurants exemplifies the spirit of community support. Families facing food insecurity can find solace in these local initiatives, showcasing humanity’s resilience in tough times.
Residents are encouraged to share these resources widely and support these local businesses that are stepping up to provide essential help during the SNAP crisis. Stay tuned for further updates as this developing situation unfolds.
