Mariners Confirm $7M Option on All-Star Closer Munoz
UPDATE: The Seattle Mariners have officially confirmed they are exercising their $7 million club option on closer Andres Munoz for the 2026 season, a major move that underscores their commitment to a key player. This decision, reported by The Seattle Times earlier today, solidifies Munoz’s position as one of the elite closers in Major League Baseball.
In the past two seasons, Munoz has saved 60 games while maintaining an impressive 1.92 ERA and limiting opponents to a mere .160 batting average. His remarkable performance in the 2025 season saw him achieve 38 saves and only allow two home runs across 62 1/3 innings.
The Mariners’ decision to retain Munoz is particularly significant following his impactful postseason run, where he contributed 8 1/3 scoreless innings, helping the Mariners reach the Game 7 of the ALCS. However, his absence during a critical moment in that game, where the Toronto Blue Jays rallied to score a series-winning three-run home run, has raised questions about managerial decisions moving forward.
Manager Dan Wilson opted for pitcher Eduard Bazardo instead of Munoz during that pivotal inning, a choice that ultimately cost the Mariners a chance at the championship.
Looking ahead, Munoz’s contract includes provisions for salary increases based on games finished, with potential raises up to $2 million. The Mariners also hold club options for Munoz valued at $8 million in 2027 and $10 million for 2028.
Originally drafted by the San Diego Padres in 2019, Munoz showcased his talent with a fastball averaging 99.9 mph before undergoing Tommy John surgery. After his return, he has become a crucial asset for the Mariners, especially since they acquired him in a trade that sent catcher Austin Nola and two relievers to San Diego.
With the Mariners now securing Munoz for another season, fans and analysts alike will be watching closely as the team prepares for the 2026 season. The urgency of retaining a player of his caliber emphasizes the Mariners’ ambitions to compete at the highest level.
Stay tuned for more updates as the offseason unfolds and the Mariners continue to shape their roster for the upcoming year.
