Lawmakers Urgently Push Health Care Deal Before Year-End Deadline
Officials in Washington, D.C., are racing against the clock as they work to address the impending expiration of crucial health care subsidies that impact over 22 million Americans. The stakes are high with health care costs set to surge for millions when the current Affordable Care Act credits expire at the end of the year.
Rep. Kevin Kiley (R-CA) expressed cautious optimism about a potential resolution, emphasizing the urgency to act. “On average, people’s healthcare premiums will double,” Kiley warned in a recent interview. He is advocating for the Fix It Act, a proposal co-sponsored with Rep. Sam Liccardo (D-CA), aimed at extending these vital subsidies for an additional two years.
The proposed legislation is critical for independent contractors, small business employees, and retirees not yet eligible for Medicare. “These are the people who are going to be affected and I’m not willing to just do nothing,” Kiley stated.
As Congress grapples with the health care crisis, House Speaker Mike Johnson has yet to set a date for a vote on the measure. However, Kiley is hopeful that the Senate will take action on some form of an extension by December 12. “Hopefully the Speaker will understand this is a priority for the members and a priority for the American people,” he added.
Earlier discussions around a plan from the White House indicated a similar approach to Kiley and Liccardo’s proposal, although President Donald Trump has shown reluctance to endorse an extension of the credits. Kiley confirmed that he is gaining support from fellow Republicans for the initiative, highlighting the need for a collective push to tackle rising health care costs.
The urgency of this situation is underscored by the potential financial burden on millions of families. Without immediate intervention, many could face significant increases in their health care premiums, particularly as we enter the new year.
As lawmakers continue these discussions, the focus remains on finding a viable solution before the critical deadline. KCRA 3 Political Director Ashley Zavala will provide in-depth coverage of these developments. Stay informed on California politics every Sunday at 8:30 a.m. on KCRA 3.
This ongoing situation demands attention as it could affect the health care landscape for millions across the nation. Share this urgent update to keep your community informed!
